While big booms in sales are fantastic, the truly savvy wine buyer will know that wines can disappear as quickly as they appear. Above all, the sign of a great wine is a steady, sure-footed, and long-lasting rise in sales, across trade sectors; that is what we’re certainly seeing with the largely undersung Grüner Veltliner.

Just ask Lance Foyster MW, importer of the wine for over 20 years;

“When we first started to import Grüner Veltliner, in tiny quantities, we were dealing almost exclusively with sommeliers, whereas now, in London at least, you can find it on a pub blackboard.”

Sales of Grüner hit a record sale figure of over €180 million in 2019. More up-to-date figures aren’t available yet. However, with a boom in complimentary cuisine such as Thai food on a huge rise, in the restaurant sector and at home during the pandemic, the omens are very good for this Austrian Native.

So let us move on to our trophy bottle. Considering Grüner Veltliner is the most popular wine to come from Austria, we’re very happy to tell you that ours is from the highest achieving Austrian winery in 2020; Hirtl, the only Austrian winery to receive medals in the IWSC and the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles that year… and it was this bottle that really caught their attention. A Bronze in 2020 and a gold the year earlier (So you know the wine ages great too.)
